Cardi B Refutes Robert Townsend’s Claim She Asked To Be In ‘B.A.P.S.’ Remake

A legendary filmmaker’s quote has earned Cardi B’s attention. Fans were excited to hear that Cardi was interested in tackling more film roles, but a report about B.A.P.S. caused the Grammy winner to enter the chat. Recently, Robert Townsend chatted with Slash Film about his cult classic. The filmmaker is a legend in the industry with a career that spans decades. His productions have gone down in history and inspired other award-winners to swim against the tide. Slash Film praised B.A.P.S., the 1997 favorite starring Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle.

“The thing that I would say is this: I’m a filmmaker. It’s a well-made movie,” said Townsend. “And if you go on the ride and go, ‘Oh, it’s two country girls trying to make some money and then they find who they are, and at the end of the day, they do win. But it’s because they’re being honest and transparent.’ Do gold diggers or women that have ulterior motives exist? Yeah. These two country girls from Decatur, Georgia, got caught up in the scheme, but at the end of the day, we reveal their heart, and it’s a love story.”

There were rumors that Townsend may have toyed with the idea of a second B.A.P.S., but the death of Natalie Desselle seems to have thwarted its future. Desselle sadly passed away in 2020 after succumbing to cancer. Townsend expressed it was difficult to entertain the idea of a sequel without Desselle’s involvement. He said, “It’s so funny because people want a sequel to that and … I don’t know.”

”There’s people that love, love, love the film and some people that didn’t get it,” said the director. “And those that love it —  like you love it and you get it — I’ve had people go, ‘Hey, we want to do a remake.’ Everybody from Megan Thee Stallion to Cardi B is like, ‘Could we do…’” However, Cardi took to Twitter to address the statement.

Cardi Denies Reaching Out

“I don’t even know where that rumor even came about,” she said in a retweet. An original post from an outlet showed a side-by-side of Desselle and Berry in B.A.P.S. next to Megan and Cardi in their “WAP” visual. “Maybe because we looked soo cute in the Wap video ?💖💛 …kiss kiss 💋.” Of course, it could have been someone on Cardi’s team who inquired about a future film.
