Born Anne Mae Bullock in Tennessee in 1939, Turner first broke into the music industry in the late 1950s as a part of Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. She and Turner would marry in 1962 and the pair became a powerful music duo. However, they disbanded in 1976 and divorced in 1978. That led into the 1980s, where Turner bounced back like few before her. Her 1984 album Private Dancer peaked at #3 and went five-times platinum in the United States. Meanwhile, the single “What’s Love Got To Do With It” spent three week at #1 in September of that year.

Turner was also known for the pop culture integration of her work. She not only starred in 1985’s Mad Max: Thunderdome, but she also recorded the film’s main original song, “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)”. The single reached #2 in the charts. Meanwhile, Turner’s other song for the film, “One of the Living” peaked at #15. A decade later, Turner would be asked to perform the theme for the 1995 James Bond film, Goldeneye. “Goldeneye” was originally set to be a Depeche Mode song but the band was on tour at the time. Instead, Bono and U2 wrote a song especially for Turner after she was offered the prestigious role instead. Turner also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986. Turner would later produce a West End musical about her life called Tina. A music legend, she will be deeply missed.
