Tyler, The Creator Hates Seeing Top Five Rapper Lists

Pretty much anywhere rap music is discussed, fans are debating about who is the best around. From making a Mount Rushmore of rappers to just a simple top-five list of either living rapper or of all time, there are plenty of ways that this discussion manifests. Even though plenty of those lists include Tyler, The Creator, he isn’t a fan of the whole concept. In a new interview on the Rap Radar Podcast Tyler made it clear that he doesn’t like “Rap Twitter” or the idea that there’s any kind of objectively best rapper.

“You know what annoys me? When people are like, ‘This is my top five,’ and people argue it. You got 17-year-olds like, ‘Yeah, dude, Ready To Die and Enter The Wu-Tang is my top ten albums ever,’” Tyler rants. He goes on to say he thinks that fans are only pretending to appreciate those albums to generate clout in various online circles where they’re respected. He continues “It’s performative. Again, some people might be right, but … you got YoungBoys and Baby’s out here and that’s your favorite album?”

Tyler, The Creator Take Aim At Rap Twitter

Tyler, The Creator recently brushed shoulders with someone whose name often appears in best rapper lists, Kendrick Lamar. Tyler makes a cameo appearance in the music video for Kendrick and Baby Keem’s recent collaboration “The Hillbillies.” He also recently announced the return of his Flog Gnaw Music Festival which hasn’t happened since 2019. The festival’s 2023 edition doesn’t have a full lineup confirmed yet but it’s set to take place in November.

Earlier this year Tyler dropped a deluxe edition of his 2021 album Call Me If You Get Lost. The reissue featured the fan-favorite single “DOGTOOTH.” It also featured an A$AP Rocky collaboration that was long rumored to exist from the original album’s sessions. Tyler guested on two singles last year including Pharrell and 21 Savage track “Cash In Cash Out.” He also joined Pharrell again alongside Nigo, Gunna, A$AP Rocky, Pop Smoke, and Pusha T in the song “I Know NIGO.” Tell us your take on Tyler’s comments about top 5 rapper lists in the comments below.
