Best known for her viral hit single “Chopped Cheese” from 2022, Brooklyn songwriter and rapper Steph G has since become a household name within just those two years. She is also considered one of the early pioneers of the “female rap” wave, and has been featured on multiple credible platforms such as “On The Radar,” “From The Block,” “Still Got The Juice,” “Daily Gems” and more.
Most recently, she unveiled a new single titled “Feeling Myself,” which has amassed over 250k streams on both YouTube and Spotify in just two months of release. It’s on track to become her biggest record to date, elevating Steph to even greater heights in her career. So it was only right I sat down with the gorgeous female emcee for an exclusive 87 interview. We spoke about the new record, her mental health, the rest of her 2024 plans and much more.
Check out the full Q&A in full below!
First and foremost, how is Steph G? How is your mental health?
Steph: “I’m blessed! I feel great! Some days are better than others but I [always] try to stay positive to protect my mental state.”
The title is self-explanatory – but what was the inspiration behind your new record “Feeling Myself.”
Steph: “The inspiration behind the single was for all the beautiful ladies. I wanted an anthem that made ALL women feel good about themselves and build up their confidence. I wanted to make a record that made them feel like they are ‘THAT’ girl.. and I feel I delivered!”
The official video is very cinematic, vibrant and choreographed, how was it shooting the visual?
Steph: “Shooting the video was so much fun! We did some organic shots at an AirBnB.. just trying on outfits and vibin’. A few days later we took it to a studio for the aspects that needed that type of production. It was a lot of work but it was [all] worth it!. Thank you to everyone who helped create this masterpiece!”
Joe Budden recently said on his podcast that the “woman rapper wave is over” – you being one of the staple female rappers in the game, what’s your thoughts on his statement?
Steph: “I have to disagree. I believe we are now just experiencing our ‘golden era’ as women in Hip-Hop. I feel [now] there’s many different styles we’re bringing to the table, so there’s a female artist for everyone to like.”
What advice would you give up-and-coming female artists?
Steph: “The best advice I can give is stay true to yourself and don’t feed into the internet trolls. Staying true to yourself will always work best and people will always resonate with you, for being YOU. Also don’t pay any mind into the negative energy the industry will bring. Just keep working and up it every time!”
Last but not least, what can fans expect from Steph G the rest of 2024?
Steph: “Fans can expected a lot of new music and new sounds from me. This is a crossover year for Steph G! Stay tuned!”
